Is Winter the Off-Season in Charleston?

Yes, in visitor terms. January is traditionally one of the lightest months of the year for visitors, according to Post and Courier reporting with the College of Charleston Office of Tourism Analysis, and the federal lodging benchmark for Charleston drops in winter.

GSA lodging per diem, Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester (FY2027)

Per night

November to February

$218

March to May

$288

June to October

$244

The GSA rate is a federal travel benchmark, not a hotel price, but it follows the same seasonal pattern: winter sits at the low end of the year and spring at the top. Holiday weeks and event weekends, such as New Year's Eve and the February wildlife exposition, can still fill up, so check your dates before you assume a quiet city.

Where Should You Stay for a Charleston Winter Getaway?

For a longer winter stay, look for room to spread out, a kitchen, and laundry. Winter trips tend to run slower, and a rainy evening is easier with a cooked dinner in and a sofa to sit on.

The Iris Charleston is an apartment hotel at 84 Line Street in Cannonborough-Elliottborough, one block from King Street. Each suite type lists a full kitchen with an induction cooktop, a full-size refrigerator, a microwave, and a dishwasher, plus an in-suite washer and dryer, so a week-long stay does not need a full suitcase. The Superior Suites are on the second and third floors, the Signature Suites are spread across floors, and the Premier Suite is on the ground floor at the front of the building with its own entrance.

There are trade-offs to know. The Iris is north of the most visited historic streets, so the Battery and the French Quarter are a longer walk or a short ride. A full oven is not listed in the published amenities. The Premier Suite faces the street, with privacy film and blackout shades on the windows.

If you are driving, on-site parking uses car carousels with size limits, so reserve parking ahead. The Iris allows one pet per reservation for a one-time fee, and direct bookings are price matched against third-party sites. Questions about a longer winter stay go to 843.329.2040.
