Charleston Literary Festival (Nov. 6 to 15)
Now in its 10th year, the festival runs ten days of author conversations at the Dock Street Theatre, with book signings after sessions. You can buy tickets for single events or an all-access pass on the festival site.
Harvest Festival (Nov. 7)
Charleston County Parks hosts a day of local bluegrass, hayrides, and fall food at Johns Island County Park from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is built for families, and it is outside the city, so plan on a car. Details are on the Charleston County Parks announcement.
YALLFest (Nov. 13 to 14)
YALLFest is a young adult book festival founded in 2011 with Blue Bicycle Books on King Street. There is no general admission ticket and the panels are free. Only the three headliner events at the Charleston Music Hall on John Street need tickets, and most venues sit within a few blocks of the bookstore at 420 King St. Some signings may need advance tickets, which the festival announces with its schedule.
Food & Wine Classic (Nov. 13 to 15)
Hosted by Food & Wine, Travel + Leisure, and Southern Living and presented by Explore Charleston, the Classic runs three days of Grand Tastings, chef demos, and seminars. Add-ons such as the Lowcountry Tailgate at the College of Charleston's Cistern Yard are sold separately and can sell out. Passes are a serious spend, so check current pricing on the official site before you plan around it.
Holy Smokes BBQ Festival (Nov. 14)
Pitmasters and chefs cook across four barbecue villages: Traditional, Texas, New School, and Coastal. Tickets are all you can eat, and proceeds support Hogs for the Cause and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston. It is at Riverfront Park in North Charleston, so you will need a ride.
Holiday Festival of Lights (opens Nov. 13)
The three-mile drive-through at James Island County Park opens Nov. 13 and runs nightly from 5:30 to 10 p.m. through Dec. 31, with more than 750 light displays. It is open on Thanksgiving, and Charleston County Parks recommends buying tickets in advance. Our Holiday Festival of Lights guide covers tickets and timing.
Which November Weekend Needs the Most Planning?
Nov. 13 to 15, 2026. That one weekend holds the Food & Wine Classic, YALLFest, Holy Smokes, opening night of the Holiday Festival of Lights, and the final weekend of the Literary Festival.
Day |
What is on |
Fri., Nov. 13 |
Food & Wine Classic day 1, YALLFest kicks off in the afternoon, Festival of Lights opening night, Literary Festival |
Sat., Nov. 14 |
Food & Wine Classic, YALLFest panels and headliners, Holy Smokes (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), farmers market, Literary Festival |
Sun., Nov. 15 |
Food & Wine Classic final day, Literary Festival final day |
Stacked events mean rooms, dinner reservations, and downtown parking get competitive at the same time. If those dates work for you, book your stay and your restaurant tables early. If you would rather skip the overlap, the first week of November still gives you the art walk, the Harvest Festival, and Second Sunday.
Driving in? Read our parking breakdown first. Big event weekends put more cars downtown, so know where you will park before you arrive.
What Are Free Things to Do in Charleston in November?
Free options include the First Friday Art Walk (Nov. 6), Second Sunday on King (Nov. 8), the Saturday farmers market in Marion Square, and the YALLFest panels.
- Second Sunday on King (Nov. 8): King Street closes to cars from Queen Street to Calhoun Street from noon to 5 p.m., and shops and restaurants move onto the street. It runs on the second Sunday of every month.
- First Friday Art Walk (Nov. 6): The Charleston Gallery Association opens dozens of downtown galleries from 5 to 8 p.m. It is free and self-guided, and it runs every month except January and July.
- Charleston Farmers Market: Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Nov. 21. It is closed Nov. 28, then returns as a holiday market on Dec. 5, 6, 12, 13, and 19, per the City of Charleston farmers market page. See our guide to the Charleston Farmers Market for what to buy.
- A self-guided walk: South of Broad, the Battery, and Waterfront Park cost nothing to see, and November afternoons are far easier on foot than July.
What Is Charleston Like Over Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 26, 2026. Expect a busy morning around Marion Square for the Turkey Day Run, a few attractions closed for the day, and the Festival of Lights open that night.
The Turkey Day Run 5K is held Thanksgiving morning, with the post-race party in Marion Square. Check the race website for the 2026 start time and course. In 2025, the City of Charleston closed the route to traffic during the race, from Marion Square down Meeting Street, through South of Broad, and back up King Street, so plan any Thanksgiving morning driving around it.
Fort Sumter is closed on Thanksgiving Day, according to the National Park Service, so book your ferry for another day. The Marion Square farmers market is also closed the Saturday after, Nov. 28. In recent years, Aquarium Aglow at the South Carolina Aquarium has opened the weekend before Thanksgiving; check the 2026 schedule before you count on it.
If you would rather cook than chase a holiday reservation, a kitchen helps. Suites at The Iris have full kitchens set up for light cooking, with an induction cooktop and a full-size refrigerator. A full oven is not listed, so plan a smaller meal or pick up a prepared turkey rather than roasting one.
Is Charleston Worth Visiting in November?

Where Should You Stay in Charleston in November?
Stay downtown if most of your plans are on the peninsula. YALLFest, Second Sunday, the farmers market, and the art walk are all downtown, while Holy Smokes, the Harvest Festival, and the Festival of Lights need a car.
The Iris Charleston is an apartment hotel at 84 Line Street in Cannonborough-Elliottborough, one block off King Street. Upper King, Marion Square, and the YALLFest venues are within walking distance, while the Dock Street Theatre and the French Quarter are a longer walk or a short ride.
Suites have full kitchens, and select suites have in-suite washers and dryers, which helps on a longer fall stay. On-site parking is in car carousels with size limits, and you can reserve a spot online, which is worth doing early for the Nov. 13 to 15 weekend. Browse suites at The Iris, read up on getting around without a car, or call 843.329.2040 with questions about November dates.
